Why BEE-Rated Ceiling Fans Are Important 2023

The Bureau of energy efficiency (BEE) decided to make it a mandatory action for all fan brand manufacturers to label the BEE star rating. This step is taken to encourage the usage of energy-efficient appliances and to facilitate the customers to make an informed decision while buying the fan.

BLDC ceiling fans are among the most energy-efficient and 5-star-rated fans in the market. These fans are not only energy efficient but also offer other features that make them smart fan. There are several brands that introduced the BLDC ceiling fans and contributed a significant role in saving energy.

Superfan was the first brand to introduce the BLDC or 5-star rated fan. However, today many brands are there in the market that are the leading manufacturers of these fans. Atomberg is one of the leading and best BLDC fans in India, which helped many institutions as well as workspaces like IIT Mumbai, Railway offices, etc., to save energy as well as money by installing the BLDC fan there in place of the ordinary fans.

Why is it Essential to Install a BEE 5 Star-rated Ceiling Fan?

1. To save the energy

Suppose,

The speed of the fan is 280 rpm.

Now the electricity consumption of

Normal fan

In one hour- 75 watts

That means it takes 1.25 watts to complete 280 Rotations per minute.

And so,

Each spin consumes nearly 0.004 watts of energy.

BEE 5-star Rated Ceiling Fan

In one hour-28, watts

That means it takes 0.46 watts to complete 280 Rotations per minute.

And so,

Each spin consumes nearly 0.0016 watts of energy.

So the total savings in each spin is if we use a BEE 5-star rated fan, it is 0.0028 watts.

2. To Save Money on the Electricity Bill

Firstly,

let’s see the electricity consumption in unit consumption of an ordinary Fan

normal fan electricity consumption per hour is 70 watts

let’s assume a ceiling fan runs 10 hours per day then,

70x10= 700 watts per day consumption.

now, let’s see the consumption of electricity in units for one month then,

700x30= 21000 watts

So,

24000 watts = 21 Kwh

1 unit= 1kwh

so, A ordinary ceiling fan consumes 24 units of electricity per month.

Suppose 1 unit costs suppose 10 rs, then 24x10= 240 rs.

However,

if we consider a BEE 5-star rated fan, then,

BEE 5 Star rated fan electricity consumption per hour is 30 watts

let’s say a BLDC 5-star rated ceiling fan runs for 10 hours per day then,

30x10= 300 watts per day consumption.

now, let’s calculate the consumption of electricity in units for one month then,

300x30= 9000 watts

So,

9000 watts = 9 Kwh

1 unit= 1kwh

Suppose 1 unit costs suppose 10 rs, then 9x10= 90 rs

So, a BEE 5-star rated ceiling fan consumes 9 units per month, costing 90 INR, about 60–70% less than a Normal fan.

3. To Minimize the Carbon Footprint Emission

According to the Carbon and energy audit 2021,

We can reduce 82T of carbon emission per 1000 BLDC fan use.

So reducing the rate, use of per BLDC fan,

82/1000- 0.082T annually.

How is the BEE Star Rating Calculated?

The BEE star rating is calculated based on Fans service value using the formula, i.e. The ratio of air delivery in cubic meters per minute to the power consumption in watts.

Suppose,

fan air delivery is 230 CMM and

The energy consumption of the fan is 50 watts then,

Service value is 230/50= 4.6

And if the energy consumption is 30 watts, then,

Service value is 230/30= 7.6

According to the guidelines of BEE, the fans with <1200mm, the guidelines for star ratings are

1 Star

2 Star

3 star

4 Star

5 Star

≥ 3.1 to < 3.6

≥ 3.6 to < 4.1

≥ 4.1 to < 4.6

≥ 4.6 to < 5.1

≥ 5.1

This table shows that the higher the service value higher will be the star rating which means the more energy efficient the fan will be.

According to the BEE, the fan delivering the air of 210 CMM consuming maximum energy of not more than 52.5 watts would be given a 1-star rating for a <1200mm sweep-sized fan. At the same time, the 5-star rating is given to the fan using 25-35 watts of energy by delivering 230CMM of air.

Conclusion

Mandatory BEE star-rated labeling is a revolutionary step in the fan market, facilitating the consumers to make an informed decision before purchasing the fan. We hope this article helped you understand the need for BEE 5-star rated ceiling fans. So, remember to check for the BEE star rating before buying your new fan.
